Symbiosis is a landscape architecture and planning firm, providing design services for public and private clients interested in a joint investment in design excellence.
Our preference is for places suffused with a calm and generous spirit, where natural resources are conserved and celebrated.
We strive to give inspired responses to the land, project context, ant the site history. We enjoy multidisciplinary work. We pay special attention in connecting spaces and systems. We think creatively about the best designs for the loci; including the efficient use of water and energy. We try to understand the purpose of the project and push the boundary to find the optimum solution in every phase of the design process. However, at the end of functionaity fulfillment, we always inject pleasure and poetry into the project for long lasting enjoyment and delights.
Started in 2002, the firm is located in metropolitan Washington, DC area and while a majority of its clients are in Baltimore/Washington/Northern Virginia, the office is accustomed to working on projects in and abroad.
Our experienced team provides full range of services from conceptual design to construction administration. Our team is trained in landscape design, architecture, planning, horticulture, playscape, and ecology
Symbiosis is a Maryland Woman owned DBE/MBE/SBE Business Enterprise as well as a SMWM Business Enterprise in Virginia.
In 2015, the affiliated Symbiosis DC was established to better service clients in the District of Columbia and is certified as L/D/S/DZE Business Enterprise in DC.
Lanshing Hwang is the Principal of Symbiosis. A scientist by training, she is a passionate advocate for sustainable landscapes.
Before establishing Symbiosis in 2002, she worked with various design firms in the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan area is a believer of interdisciplinary collaboration. Her experience encompasses master planning, site landscape design and project management.
Her work covers a wide range of institutional, regional planning, ecotourism, and commercial landscapes ranging from less than an acre to 40 square miles. She is interested in bringing out the unique quality of landscapes that engage human activities by clear and distinct design.
