WOODSIDE URBAN PARK

Silver Spring, MD

Woodside Urban Park is a two-acre park in downtown Silver Spring at the busy corner of Georgia Avenue and Spring Street. The landscape design consolidates and updates this heavily wooded urban greenspace for the central business district while preserving and enhancing the amenities such as the playground, central lawn, and tennis courts that the surrounding neighborhood enjoys. The demonstration and community gardens incorporate required stormwater treatment features. Playscape design focus is on integrated play that works with the surrounding site context. The topography, vegetation and slopes provide not only motor and perceptual, but also emotional and intellectual experiences for users of all ages.

Other program elements included in the facility plan:

  • improved transit

  • improved streetscape

  • improved accessibility

  • looped internal walkway

  • community and demonstration gardens

  • terraced areas for seating and relaxation

  • upgraded site furnishings

  • preservation of existing canopy trees

  • art incorporation

  • improved lighting

The purpose of this project is to prepare a facility plan for the site's entire renovation. The Facility Plan was approved by the Planning Board on October 6, 2011.
